Best Photos
Minolta Hi-Matic
This is one of three photos I took for the final project of Digital Photography. It’s of my grandfather’s old film camera from the 60’s and it was supposed to replicate a photo taken by Ray Massey of a Leica camera. Not only do I think the photo turned out really well, the process of taking the image was also fun too. While shooting photos indoors isn’t my favorite thing to do, I put my best effort into taking this photo and it turned out to be the closest I’ve gotten to working in a studio space. It was fun playing with lighting and seeing how shadows and reflections play a part in a photo.

Little Rock Tower
Back in seventh grade, my earth science teacher made us take one photo of something natural for a week, and this is one of my favorites that came out of that project. Back then I didn’t know what makes a photo great, but now with the knowledge from class I can tell that this photo played into the rule of thirds and deals with contrast. I especially like the close focus range of the image and how the background is heavily blurred compared to the rocks. From then to now, I don’t take many photos in a portrait orientation, though I think this photo uses it well. |
The Lone Tree
Also taken during the seventh grade weekly photo project, this image of a lone tree in a field was one of the better ones to come out of the project. For me what makes this photo good is how all the dimension has been taken out of the image with the tree being almost all one color and the background being so far off in the distance. I also like the four distinct colors of the background and how the image almost could seem like a painting. Back in Digital Photography 1, I thought of recreating this photo, but as I drove through the intersection at Scio Church and Parker (the site where the photo was taken), a sheet metal barn had been put up blocking the clear view of the tree.

Pictured Rocks Coastline
Back in 2021, a group of friends and I took a summer vacation up to the U.P. to ride bikes and explore nature. On our last day there, we decided to take a 7 mile round trip hike out to Chapel Rock and the Pictured Rocks shoreline. While the hike was long I decided to bring along my drone as I knew there would be no obstructions and a great view. It was well worth it. I was able to take both this photo, along with many more of the water and the coastline. Out of all of the photos on that trip, I think this one turned out to be the best with the leading lines and the contrast between the water and the coastline.

Lily Pads
Taken for the landscape section of Digital Photography, this is one of my favorites I took. It was taken from a boardwalk at Pickerel Lake over on the west side of the state and I knew as soon as I took it that I would use it for my portfolio. On that day both the sky and the water were so clear that at one angle you could see to the bottom, and at another, the water would take on this great blue hue. Though I didn’t notice it when I took it, edited it, or looked at it in the art gallery at WCC, it was only when the photo popped up in my screensaver that I noticed the turtle head peeking out of the water towards the top right corner of the picture.
